A water spill on a laptop is more serious than on a phone — but if the keyboard still works and the laptop turns on, a muffled speaker is the easiest part to fix. Here's how to clear it without opening the chassis.
Immediate steps after a spill
- Power off the laptop immediately (hold the power button)
- Unplug the charger
- Flip the laptop upside down and let it drain over a towel for 15–30 minutes
- Do NOT use a hair dryer — heat warps adhesive and the keyboard membrane
- Let it sit (off) for at least 24 hours before powering back on
Clearing the speaker with sound waves
- Once powered back on and stable, open SpeakerRescue
- Select MacBook / Laptop from the device menu
- Turn system volume to maximum
- Tilt the laptop so the speaker grilles face downward
- Run the 440Hz mode for 60 seconds (laptops have larger drivers — mid-range works best)
- Follow with 528Hz for 30 seconds
MacBook vs Windows
MacBook Pro/Air: grilles are along the keyboard deck; tilt forward. Dell XPS / HP Spectre / Lenovo ThinkPad: most have downward-firing speakers near the front edge — keep flat with a small lift under the back.
When to seek professional repair
If the speaker still crackles after 24 hours and 3 sessions, or if you smell anything burning, take the laptop to a repair shop. Liquid corrosion on the logic board can spread within days.
